How it works
The rules behind the pairings, standings and league points, in plain language. If something on a standings page surprises you, the answer is probably here.
Scoring
Win 1, draw ½, loss 0. A bye scores a full point. A "no contest" scores 0 for both players but still counts as a played game.
Swiss pairings
Round 1 pairs by rating seed: the top half plays the bottom half. From round 2 onward, players with equal scores meet, working from the leaders down. You never face the same opponent twice. The engine exhaustively searches alternatives and only allows a rematch when no valid pairing exists at all.
Colors
Colors aim to alternate and stay balanced across the event. When nothing else decides, the higher seed gets white.
Byes
With an odd number of players, one player sits out each round and scores a full point. The bye goes to the lowest-ranked player who hasn't had one yet. Nobody gets two.
Standings and tiebreaks
The order is: points, then Buchholz, then Sonneborn-Berger, then direct encounter, then number of wins, then seed. Round robins skip Buchholz.
Buchholz is the sum of all your opponents' scores. For a bye round, a virtual opponent with your own score is counted. Sonneborn-Berger adds the full score of everyone you beat and half the score of everyone you drew. Byes and no-contests add nothing there. Direct encounter applies only inside a fully tied group, and only when the tied players met each other equally often and the results fully separate them. Byes never count as wins.
Performance rating (TPR)
The average rating of the opponents you actually played, adjusted with the official FIDE table for your score percentage. Byes and no-contests are excluded. It's informational only, and extreme cases are real: a single loss to a 1629-rated opponent gives a TPR of 829, and a scoreless run against very low-rated opposition can even go negative.
Ratings
Ratings here are input only. We display them and seed by them. Results on this site never change them; official rating changes come from your federation.
Round and tournament status
Status is computed live from the facts, never stored. A round is done when every game has a result, running when it was started or any result exists, otherwise pending. In a round robin several rounds can run at once when players play ahead.
League
Each event awards placement points from the series table. Players who tie for a position share the pooled points of those positions evenly, FIDE style. When a series counts your best N events, only your N highest scores count. League standings are always a live projection from the actual results.
Registration
While a tournament is in setup with registration open, you can sign yourself up. ytec.nl accounts are approved automatically. Other sign-ups go to the organizer's approval queue.
